WHITE BEAR LAKE - On a windy day in White Bear Lake, the No. 4 seeded Alexandria Redbirds 50-and-older baseball team earned a second-place finish at the Minnesota State Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 25.

The Redbirds began the day by beating top-seeded Mill City 5-4, before falling in the championship to the No. 2 seed St. Louis Park Bees, 11-3.

Alexandria built a 5-0 lead in the game against Mill City. Mill City scored four runs in the final inning to make the finish interesting. Greg Serum earned the win for the Redbirds.

Alexandria's 50-and-older baseball team now turns its attention to the state tournament.

Both Alexandria and St. Louis Park found their way around the bases in the first inning as Alexandria scored one run and St. Louis Park scored three. St. Louis Park took control of the game from there, outscoring Alexandria 8-2 to win 11-3. St. Louis Park had 15 hits in the game.

Serum started on the mound for the Redbirds, but Doug Breikreutz finished the game.

The Redbirds, who finished third a year ago, finished second out of the 35 teams in the league and finished with a 13-2 overall record this summer. Roger Johnson, Kurtis Kuhn, Greg Serum, Tom Anderson and Joe Korkowski all played in every game.

Korkowski led the team in the batter’s box at the state tournament with four hits, three runs and three stolen bases.

Breikreutz had three hits (1 run and 1 walk), along with Jeff Kuhn (1 RBI) and Tom “Hollywood” Andeson (1 RBI, 1 walk).

Serum and Roger Johnson each had two hits. Johnson scored a run for the Redbirds.

Jerrod Kelley finished with a hit, RBI, and walk, while Bob Brittin had a hit and an RBI. Kurt Kuhn had a sacrifice fly and walked three times.
