Alexandria Senators' game suspended by rain

The Alexandria Senators took two games from June 27-28 and were in position to possibly win a third before rain suspended their contest against Brandon-Evansville that Saturday morning.

The Alexandria Senators took two games from June 27-28 and were in position to possibly win a third before rain suspended their contest against Brandon-Evansville that Saturday morning.

The Senators were tied 3-3 with Brandon-Evansville before rain cut the game short in the ninth inning. The Bluedogs were to have a runner on second with two outs and a 3-2 count on the hitter when the game was scheduled to be finished last Friday night.

The rain could not keep the Senators from traveling to Ashby and earning a 10-7 win over the A's. They then went on to Barrett on Sunday and picked up an easy 18-1 win over the Pioneers.

The top six hitters in the Alexandria lineup all had six plate appearances against Barrett. Collin Modahl was the catalyst out of the leadoff spot with four hits and five runs scored in the game. Doug Breitkreutz also had four hits, while Ron Welle chipped in three. Mike Lloyd and Chris Wessel each scored three times.

The Senators scored in every inning to blow the game open early. They put up five in the first to set the tone. Alexandria then added three runs in each of the last three innings.

Jesse Flaten was the beneficiary of all the offense. He threw a complete-game seven innings, allowing just four hits and a lone run in the sixth inning.

The win over Ashby did not come quite as easy for the Senators. Both teams put together big innings once things got started after a 90-minute rain delay. The A's scored four in the bottom of the ninth, but a five-run seventh for Alexandria proved to be too much for Ashby to overcome.

Derek Miller allowed the Senators to build a big lead through the middle innings with his performance on the mound. He went seven innings, allowing three runs on just one hit and striking out nine. It was his second consecutive one-hit performance.

Erik Maas worked 1 2/3 in relief. Kurt Kalina then came on to close the door with two outs in the ninth. He picked up a strikeout for the final out to give Alexandria pitchers 13 for the game.

Modahl had another big day at the plate with four hits. Maas added two hits, while Kalina and Welle each picked up two.
