The Cardinal boys' basketball team played tough on senior night this past Saturday but saw its four-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Detroit Lakes.

The Lakers came out and took control early before Alexandria went on a run at the end of the first half. That allowed the Cardinals to tie things up at 23 apiece going into the break.

Detroit Lakes came out strong after halftime and extended its lead to double digits in the first half of the second. The Cardinals tried to climb back into the game in the final minutes. The damage had been done, though, as the Lakers held off Alexandria from the free throw line to secure the win.

It was the last home game for seven Cardinal seniors this year. Charlie Warnes, Luke Johnson, Dillon Kelly, Steve Conley, Connor Illies, Steve Trandahl and Reggie Ronning were all recognized for what they have brought to the team this season.

Conley and Illies both went out scoring in double digits. Conley led with a team-high 18 points, while Illies was right behind with 17. Parker Giroux also chipped in with 11.

"I am privileged to have the opportunity to work with tis group of seniors," head coach Forrest Witt said. "I can't imagine it is an easy transition to play for a new coaching staff, but this group of kids adjusted and worked hard.

"High school athletics are a great platform for applying life skills, and from what I've witnessed this year, I think this group of kids will be successful and make positive impacts in their future endeavors. We thank the seniors for their hard work and commitment to Alexandria boys' basketball."

The loss dropped Alexandria to 7-16 on the season. The Cardinals wrap up the regular season tonight, Friday, when they travel to Little Falls for a Central Lakes Conference battle.
