The Alexandria Black Sox qualified for the Minnesota Amateur Class C State Baseball tournament before the Region 16C title game against Fergus Falls on Aug. 14.
But a 20-12 win over the Hurricanes already puts them further in the state tournament bracket than last season.
Last summer, the Black Sox went down in the opening round of the 48-team single-elimination tournament in a 15-2 loss to Maple Lake. This time, they’ll take on the Kimball Express in the round of 32 at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in Waconia. Kimball beat the Union Hill Bulldogs last Sunday to advance to this game.

Alexandria got a first-round bye with that win over Fergus Falls in the regional championship game behind tournament MVP Blake Stockert’s start on the mound and eighth-inning home runs from Matthew and Eric Carlsen that opened things up.
The Hurricanes advanced to the state tournament as the second seed in Region 16C, and moved on with a first-round win over the Hanska Lakers. They take on the St. Martin Martins in the second round.
If the Black Sox beat Kimball on Saturday, they advance to the round of 16 against the winner of Maple Lake and Jordan. That game would take place at 1:30 p.m. in Chaska on Sept. 4. The rest of the tournament will finish through that holiday weekend in September with the championship game being played in Waconia on Sept. 6 at noon.
