Alex boys win third straight against Otters

The Alexandria boys basketball team improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Central Lakes Conference with a 49-46 win over Fergus Falls last Friday night.

The Cardinals built a lead at the break but had to hold off a charge from the Otters in what was a rematch of the Section 8AAA title game from a year ago. Alexandria was up three when Matt Monke’s three at the buzzer came up empty.
The Otters led 10-2 early but a big run by the Cardinals gave them a lead to work with at the break. The Cardinals had the last run in them as they secured the win down the stretch for their third straight victory.
“Despite a flat performance offensively, we were able to create some turnovers and stay pretty solid on the defensive end of the floor,” head coach Forrest Witt said. “Our transition defense was real poor, and they hit three three-point shots, primarily due to a lack of communication. We had some kids make some gritty plays down the stretch, which was critical in finding a way to win.”
Ben Corson led Alexandria with 13 points, while Tyler Owen added nine. Witt said before the season that it might take a while for this group to learn how to play together with so many new faces to varsity, but the Cardinals have gotten off to a nice start early on.
“We felt we would have a chance to be a quality team because we have good balance and multiple threats,” Witt said. “We have been pleased to see kids step up and fill various roles on our team. There is always some uncertainly with so many new faces in the varsity lineup, but they have been receptive, very coachable and focused on how we can improve each day.”
Alexandria was scheduled to be on the road last night, Tuesday, before going to Sartell on Thursday and hosting Detroit Lakes on Saturday.
“We still have plenty of room for improvement so it will be exciting as we move forward to see what this group is capable of as the season progresses,” Witt said.
