After a year pause, Alexandria looks to defend section title

The Cardinals will host their season opener on Saturday with a quad as Alexandria tries to defend its first-ever section title that came the last time teams played in 2019.

The last time the Alexandria boys tennis team was on the court against another opponent was during a 2019 season where the Cardinals made history by securing their first-ever trip to a state tournament.

Alexandria has some key players back now from that group in Jacob Partington, Gannon Lueck, Andrew Wegner and Pieter Mulder as they try to lead this team to another big season.

“The guys are really excited to be back on the courts after missing a season,” 17-year head coach Dave Ronning said. “They feel we can compete for a conference title and a deep run in sections. We will compete hard with everyone. We will try to outwork everyone, even if we aren't as talented as some teams.”

Ronning loves the leadership he has in those returning players.

“Jacob Partington and Gannon Lueck are great captains and they come with a ton of energy every day,” Ronning said. “They keep everyone involved. We will also have depth. We have big numbers in the 40s, and lots of upper-class players.”

Ronning said the doubles lineup will be a work in progress this year as he figures out where exactly guys fit. He’s confident there are players on the roster who are more used to playing singles who can slide into important roles in doubles.

St. Cloud Tech and Brainerd almost always have solid programs, and Ronning expects the same this year in the Central Lakes Conference. Monticello and Becker join those two as being teams to compete with in the Section 8AA Tournament with Alexandria.
