The two Alexandria youth basketball teams that qualified for the Pacesetter Great-Five State Tournament on June 15 came back from the metro area with top-three finishes.
The Great-Five State Tournament brings together top teams from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Iowa.
The Alexandria fifth-grade boys team finished as the runner-up in the tournament, falling by just one point in overtime during the tournament championship. Alexandria faced Jackson County Central in that title game. It was a 41-41 score at the end of regulation before Jackson County Central held on to win by a 45-44 final in the extra session.
Gavin Roderick hit a three with 30 seconds left in overtime to give Alexandria a 44-43 lead, but Jackson County scored the game-winner with two seconds remaining.
Alexandria reached the finals by beating West Fargo, the North Dakota state champions, in a 61-35 game and by beating Wisconsin state champion, Winneconne, in a 33-26 game.
Team members for Alexandria are Myles Gray, Camden Kosters, Roderick, Mason Witt, Talan Witt, Ben Jones, Max Janssen and Thomas Hinrichs. Coaches are Zach Witt and Forrest Witt.
Girls team takes third
The Alexandria fourth-grade girls team finished third in the Great-Five State Tournament.
Alexandria beat a team from DeForest out of Wisconsin in an 18-11 game and lost to Pella Black out of Iowa in a 24-18 pool-play game. Alexandria beat Kimball in a 20-6 game during the third-place contest.
Team members are Gretta Kelly, Erin Cross, Avery Ketelsen, Kierra Ostendorf, Abby Evink, Lylah Radach, McKinley Hoelscher and Malia Sayre. Coach is Kayla Hoelscher.
