The Osakis softball team saw its season come to an end on May 20 as the Silverstreaks dropped a close game at Sauk Centre in the opening round of the Section 6AA Tournament.

It was a match-up of the 10th and seventh-seeded teams as the Mainstreeters (14-7) hosted. It was two three-run innings for Sauk Centre in the second and fourth frames that helped create enough separation to win an 8-5 game.

“No team wants to see their season end, especially early in the section tournament,” Osakis head coach John Stigman said. “For us today, we just could not string hits together. We had chances and runners on, but we just couldn’t get those hits in a row or in the clutch. The difference today was that they hit, and we didn’t. Hats off to our defense today, as we played as well defensively as we have this year.”

Senior Jaden Klimek started from the circle for Osakis and went four innings. Sauk Centre put up seven earned runs on seven hits and four walks before Osakis freshman Shelbe Schmidt worked the final two frames. Tia Dykema and Lexi Klimek both had two hits to help lead Osakis’ offense.

“Our goal as a team this year was to put our team first -- to create a strong ‘we,’” Stigman said. “So we set aside the outcome for building the background that leads to the outcome. Everything we did was to get stronger as a unit, put individualism aside and create a strong collective. Did we accomplish that goal? I think we did. I think we became a stronger unit at the end than we were three months ago.”

Stigman credited his seniors in Kylie Anderson, Jaden Klimek, Aubrey Koep, Morgan Herzog and Shea Olson for their role in establishing that culture.

“They have been such a dedicated group to their teammates and to our program,” Stigman said. “The years of dedication that they have shown has been tremendous. To look into our dugout this summer and next year and not see them will be tough. We will miss them greatly. We get the best people in this program, and these five are no exception to that.”

The Silverstreaks wrapped up the year at 8-10 overall. They finished 6-4 in the Prairie Conference.
