The West Central Area boys basketball team honored a 15-10 season recently as the Knights handed out their season awards.
"It was a fun season with a great group of guys that were close, unselfish and had fun playing basketball," WCA head coach Kraig Hunter said. "We were an inexperienced team coming into the year, and we were proud to finish with 15 wins, considering the number of experienced teams we had on our schedule."
Jack Van Kempen brought home a lot of those honors as the junior forward was named MVP, Chairman of the Boards and All-Pheasant Conference. He also earned the award for the top free throw shooter on the team.
Van Kempen broke out this year in a lead role for this team. He averaged 14.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.76 steals per game, while also leading the team in blocks overall with 41.
Senior Teigen Moritz and sophomore Grant Beuckens joined Van Kempen on the All-Pheasant Conference team, while junior Gage Staples was an honorable-mention selection.
Moritz earned the Mr. Consistency Award from his team. He averaged 7.9 points and 6.8 rebounds.
Beuckens got the Assist Leader Award after averaging 4.2 helpers a night to go with 11.5 points per game. Staples was named the Knights' Most Valuable Defensive Player after leading the team in steals per game with 1.84. He also scored 9.3 points a night.
Senior Gavin Paulson got the Hardest Worker Award for the Knights, and Brady Reeve was named the Most Improved Player.
"Our two seniors, Teigen Moritz and Gavin Paulson, were just outstanding in their character, leadership and work ethic," Hunter said. "There is no doubt they will be successful people in life. They have given a lot of themselves to our basketball program and will always be a part of the WCA Basketball family."
