Biathlon: Bosek, Hegg compete at Youth World Championships
Alexandria's Kaisa Bosek and Stormy Hegg are two of the top skiers on the Cardinals Nordic ski team, and the two also use that skiing experience to perform biathlons at events across the state and country.
Bosek and Hegg both competed in the Youth World Championships in Utah recently at the Soldier Hollow Biathlon Center. Biathlons incorporate an athlete's skills on skis with their marksmanship on the shooting range at stations set up along the ski course.
The Youth World Championships featured some of the top young competitors from the United States who were trying to earn a spot on the world team. The top four qualifiers will race in Slovakia Jan. 26 through Feb. 4.
The first race was a 7.5-kilometer sprint on Dec. 28. Bosek finished fifth in that race, and Hegg came in 12th. On Dec. 30, the duo raced in a 10K pursuit, where Bosek was once again fifth and Hegg finished ninth. They finished off the competition with a 6K sprint race on Dec. 31. Bosek was fifth again in that one, while Hegg climbed the ladder to seventh place.
"Both Kaisa and Stormy shot clean in the last race," coach Jeff Bosek said. "Kaisa was the top shooter with only two misses for all three races, but still fell short of making the top four. The top four qualifiers were from California, Alaska, Minnesota and Utah."
The next big race will come in March at the North American Biathlon Championships.
