The Alexandria girls soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Section 8A foe Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Monday night.

The Cardinals (6-7-1) bottled up the Comets (7-6-1) in their own end for the first five minutes of the game but had nothing to show for it in terms of shots.

“Hillcrest played a conservative defensive game, with a deep sweeper and packed defensive players inside their penalty area,” Alexandria head coach Tom Roos said. “

That proved to be a worthwhile approach as the Cardinals struggled to get shots off from the perimeter.

Alexandria’s only goal came 16 minutes in when Anna Zwilling set up Kaye Paschka with a pass before Paschka went to the right and tucked a shot just inside the upper far post from 15 yards out.

The Comets answered right back eight minutes later with a goal that eventually led to the tie.

Neither team got many shots off. Alexandria’s Sophia Vinje had three saves, while Hillcrest’s keeper turned aside 10 shots.

The Cardinals have two more games on the regular-season schedule as they host Willmar (5-8) tonight, Tuesday, at 7 p.m. before welcoming in Brainerd (10-2) at the same time on Oct. 8.
