Blizzard hockey: Alexandria wraps up perfect December ahead of matchup with unbeaten Bulls

The Alexandria Blizzard wrapped up a perfect month of December on New Year's Eve as the Blizzard swept Willmar in a home-and-home series, this time by a 7-2 final.

Alexandria was 10-0 during December and capped that run off with a dominant showing against the Warhawks that started with the Blizzard leading 5-0 after two periods.

Brett Meister and Brenden Payne each had two goals to lead the way, while Tanner Frerichs, Austyn Renn and Ryan Worley all scored, as well. Logan Nelson had four assists and Tristen Poliseno added three helpers.

That made things easy on Kyle Hayden in goal. He turned aside 23 shots for the win to move his record to 4-2 overall with a .902 save percentage and 3.09 goals-against average.

Alexandria's run of wins has catapulted the Blizzard up the West Division standings into a second-place tie with Granite City. Both have 36 points, just one point off division-leading New Ulm.

The Blizzard will put its winning streak on the line against the best team in the league this weekend. North Iowa has an NA3HL-best 55 points and a 26-0-2-1 record out of the Central Division.

The Bulls are in Alexandria for two games at 7:10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
