Roundup: Alexandria girls win in Fergus Falls, while boys take fifth

West Central Area boys show off their depth by finishing second against bigger programs at the 63rd annual John Hermes Invite.

The Alexandria girls cross country team got another win on Thursday as the Cardinals went to the 63rd annual John Hermes Invitational in Fergus Falls and won handily with 28 points as Fargo North was a distant second with 52 points.

Alexandria was paced with a 1-2-3 finish from Aleah Miller (19:30.3), Emma Ecker (19:40.3) and Jaelyn Miller (19:57.6). Brynn Kosters was 10th (20:42.3) and Giselle Jahner 12th (21:05) to finish off the scoring. Brynn Cross (22nd, 22:05.9) and Amanda Bergerson (26th, 22:38.3) were not far behind to round out Alexandria’s lineup.

The Alexandria boys finished in fifth place in the 8-team varsity field with 91 points. Fargo North won the meet with 47, and West Central Area was second with 59.

The Knights continue to be led by talented runners in Alex Salwasser and Kade Runge. Salwasser was second individually in 17:01, and Runge finished fourth in 17:12.1. Owen Sondag of Fargo North won the boys’ race in 16:35.1.

Shad Swanson of WCA was 14th in 18:22.3. Roman Mihailovschi (16th, 18:29.6), Eli Bergman (23rd, 18:42.9), Noah Olson (46th, 20:47.7) and Tyler Biss (50th, 21:34) finished off the Knights’ varsity team.


Senior Joel Brault added another top-five finish for Alexandria as he took fifth in 17:24. Landon Runge (18:03.7) and Harrison Greathouse (18:06.9) were close behind in ninth and 10th place. Throck Lehmann (32nd, 19:17.4), Tom Wilmesmeier (35th, 19:28.3), Nolan Peterson (36th, 19:33.2) and Karl Franson (37th, 19:45.8) also ran for the Cardinals.

Alexandria will now turn its attention to its first home meet of the season on Oct. 9 when the Cardinals host the Lions Meet of Champions at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center at 10 a.m.

Panthers’ Suchy wins as Parkers Prairie, Osakis run at St. John’s Prep

Parkers Prairie junior James Suchy won the individual boys’ 5K varsity race at the St. John’s Prep Invite on Tuesday as he finished in a time of 17:58.

The Panthers finished eighth as a group in the 9-team meet, while Osakis was sixth in the boys race.

Riley Kortenbush (21:39), Isaac Grabow (22:08), Ross Kortenbush (22:52), Andrew Sansness (23:59), Justin Koehn (24:07) and John O’Brien (25:42) finished off the Panthers’ varsity lineup.

Freshman Zackery Brueder led Osakis with a 12th-place individual finish in 19:21. Sophomore Jacob Taplin finished in 20:01, good for 19th place, and Brennen Gustafson (21:40), Marcus Wolf (21:52), Joseph Aaser (21:55), Zach Fiskness (24:56), Isaac Loverink (25:59), Isaac Ruegemer (26:04) and Chrisob Sadlemyer (28:27) ran for the Silverstreaks.


Freshman Stephy Marthaler was Osakis’ lone girl who ran the 5K varsity race as she finished in 33:28. Parkers Prairie freshman Sarah Toyli was the Panthers’ top varsity finisher in 25:28, while freshman Taylor Duberowski finished in 30:55.
