Remember When, 2010: Osakis grads reel in 430-pound catch

100 Years Ago

June 17, 1920

Special train for K.C. picnic. The Knights of Columbus extend a cordial welcome to all to come to Osakis for their second annual picnic on Sunday, June 27 at Lakeside park. A special train has been ordered to provide rides from Melrose at 11:30 a.m. Besides great picnic fare, there will be music by the Osakis and Long Prairie bands, baseball at the park, free launch rides, tug of war and other sports. All are welcome!

Alexandria and Osakis to play Sunday. With a 50-50 split between the two teams to date, baseball fans will be interested in Sunday’s game at Osakis when the locals take on Alexandria. Game starts at 3 p.m.

Pays $5,600 for two Holsteins. M. E. Gutches, the Reynolds Holstein breeder, this week purchased two purebred Holstein cows at the big national sale held at the state fairgrounds, totaling $5,600 for both cows. Both are of splendid breeding and are from among the best Holstein blood in the world.

June 18, 1970

Curtis Hagen dies from auto accident injuries. Curtis Hagen, 9-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Hagen of this village, passed away on Sunday evening at the University Hospital in Minneapolis of injuries suffered when he was hit by a car some 10 days earlier. The young lad had gone to the area of the Lake Osakis outlet with a friend to fish on Thursday, June 4, when he was struck by a car and critically injured.

New fire truck to be delivered next week. The new fire truck ordered by the village of Osakis is just about ready for delivery. Word has been received that the truck will be available next week. Other fire department equipment was being moved into the new fire hall this week. The new fire hall/community hall is just about complete.

Donald Tenhoff now stationed in Vietnam. Marie Private Donald E. Tenhoff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Tenhoff of Osakis, is now serving with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, First Marine Division in Vietnam.

Iwo Jima survivor Lindberg to be guest at OHS reunion. Charles W. Lindberg, the last remaining survivor of the flag raising on Iwo Jima, will attend the Osakis High School Alumni Celebration for the classes of 1915-55. Lindberg will raise a new flag previously flown over the Capitol of the United States at the high school with a ceremony by the VFW.

Work begins on I-94 interchange on TH 27 west of Alexandria. Construction on the new interchange and bridge on Trunk Highway 27 (T.H. 27) over Interstate 94 just west of Alexandria was set to begin June 5, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The new interchange for the Alexandria area and I-94 is scheduled to be completed by November.

The Safe Kids program came to Osakis Elementary School. Sponsored by Runestone Electric Association, the program includes McGruff Safe Kids Identification kits to all K-6 grade students in the Douglas, Grant, Pope and Stevens county area. The kits include a fingerprint and identification section, instructions for parent and child, emergency contact tear off card and child safety maze game.

Fishing for the halibut. Phil Carlson and Tyler Dahlheimer, both Osakis graduates, enjoyed bringing in a 430-pound halibut during a recent fishing expedition in Sitka, Alaska. Carlson is a captain and Dahlheimer a deckhand on a charter fishing boat for Angling Unlimited. Both got their start in fishing when they were younger, fishing in Lake Osakis for sunfish and walleyes.

Scott Dirkes files for Todd County sheriff. Todd County General Investigator, Scott Dirkes, is seeking his first term as Todd County sheriff in the election this fall. Dirkes, a lifetime resident of Todd County, has served more than 24 years as a peace officer in the State of Minnesota.

Osakis children raise $1,257 for St. Jude’s. Osakis students and adults recently spent the morning pedaling for charity during the annual St. Jude’s Bike-a-Thon. The Osakis group raised $1,257.
