Tyler and Cate Wolden won the 41st Osakis Lions Walleye Tournament on Lake Osakis on June 18 by more than nine pounds despite falling one fish short of their allowed six-fish limit. That was due to a big fish of 29.25 inches and three more good ones by 9:30 a.m. before high winds made things difficult going into the afternoon.
Residents of Miller Bay on Lake Osakis are pondering their next move after the Sauk River Watershed District offered $30,000 toward cleanup and Todd County offered a $6,000 grant.
Shallow, marshy areas on Lake Osakis have long been a popular nesting area for western grebes -- a bird that winters on the Pacific coast before spreading east to establish a mate, which includes a courting ritual that provides bird watchers one of the best spectacles they will see in west-central Minnesota.
Neighbors say they have not been able to find answers to their questions, and that often, people in local and state agencies won’t return their calls: “We’ve had low water before and not like this year ... They’ll say it’s the lowest it’s been since 1935. They got all kinds of excuses.”
