The Osakis City Council is moving forward with establishing a fund for community projects through the West Central Initiative.

The action was taken at the council's regular meeting Monday, Oct. 11.

City Clerk Angela Jacobson said people from the community would be able to donate to the fund.

"The advantage of having them is they're 501(c)(3), so anyone that donates could get a slip to have a tax write-off," Jacobson said.

Jacobson added that donations could be paid online or through check if the fund was set up through West Central Initiative.

Council member Al Larson asked if it was possible to set up a system so people could donate through the bank.

Jacobson said she was told an account could probably be set up there, but "they would need to work with them to get the information from an individual so they get this tax form that's going to be connected to them."

Council member Laura Backes said she would "definitely" like to see the council utilize the West Central Initiative.

"I think we have alumni all over the United States that are doing very well for themselves and would probably like to give back to the community, so if they could do it with the click of a button, I could see that would be very advantageous to any project," she said.

The motion to move forward in establishing the fund passed unanimously.
