To the editor:
On Jan. 6, 2021, a pro-Trump mob overwhelmed law enforcement and breached the U.S. Capitol in a murderous rampage of destruction. I watched in horror as this act of tyranny unfolded. I saw home grown terrorism resulting in the death of at least five people.
This attack was no spontaneous event. It was well planned and strategically executed, with the former President fueling the flame and throwing the accelerant. Then he stood back and gleefully watched the rampage on TV. Reminiscent of an arsonist.
Senate Republicans have blocked the House-passed bill, akin to the one made post 9/11, creating an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack. The Senate Republicans are letting political fear prevail, all for their short-term political gain. This comes at the expense of transparency, accountability and consequences for what happened on Jan. 6.
In spite of Republican obstruction, over 525 people have been charged and hundreds more are being investigated. I want to believe justice will prevail and our Democracy will stand strong.
Six months later, we are picking up the pieces and rebuilding trust. We must not forget how fragile a Democracy can be. We must remember Jan. 6 for what it was, a murderous act of tyranny and an attack on our values as a nation. We must also remember the needless loss of life and injury to many others. We must not allow this to get swept under the rug of time.
