To the editor:

I totally support the emphasis and focus on equality currently in the news. As has been said, we can’t drop the ball on this issue.

Watching the Charles Schwab PGA event, I’ll be happy when we don’t feel it’s necessary to always mention that Harold Varner is an African American golfer. We don’t mention the ethnic heritage of other golfers.

As Tom Lehman commented when they kept mentioning his age, “The ball doesn’t know I’m 61.” Harold is a golfer. The ball doesn’t know his heritage. It shouldn’t be important to us either. Let’s just celebrate his skill.
