To the editor:
On Monday, April 27, the Alexandria City Council voted to officially raise the legal age to purchase tobacco to age 21 in our city. The unanimous decision provided updating local ordinances so that they are compatible with new and federal requirements. This makes it easier to enforce the new regulations at the local level.
This action taken by our city leaders was crucial to protecting our youth from the dangers of tobacco. National data shows that about 95 percent of adult smokers begin smoking before they turn 21. The ages of 18 to 21 are also a critical period when many smokers move from experimental smoking to regular, daily use.
I want to thank each and every member of the City Council for recognizing these dangers to our community, especially our younger members. I know that I will breathe easier knowing this ordinance is in place, and our community will as well!
