To the editor:
On behalf of all veteran members of the Veterans Memorial Park Committee, we want to thank all who turned out at our groundbreaking ceremony on August 2. We, however, specifically want to thank the true sponsors of this memorial, those veterans who were not able to be present.
Beginning in 1776, citizens have served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. Each of those citizen-soldiers signed a contract with the government of the United States of America to protect and defend the Constitution —up to and including the sacrifice of one’s own life. Our Alexandria Veterans Memorial Park will stand as a solemn reminder for future generations that freedom is not always free.
Our park, when dedicated on July 4, 2020, will stand as a proud tribute to all citizen-soldiers who were called to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America so that the rest of us might savor the attributes of living in a free society: liberty, freedom, peace, justice and honor.
A heartfelt thank you to all in the Alexandria community and beyond who have supported us in moving this amazing project forward.
