To the editor:

This is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week - a time to enlighten folks about MS, all the people living with it, medications that work for them, and those who are dealing with living issues or just have a concern about MS.

A few weeks ago, our legislators had a town hall meeting in Alexandria and I was privileged to speak about a bill that will be introduced shortly called the Family Caregivers Tax Credit. This bill is essential to helping seniors and people with disabilities continue to live independently in our community and out of our nursing homes. A caregiver has to give of their time when this becomes an issue and thus misses some work time.

The Family Caregiver Tax Credit will provide limited financial compensation (up to $200 per month or $2,400 per year) to families.

This would curtail caregivers' use of public programs and allow families to remain in the community longer. I feel this is the best of time to bring this bill to your readers' attention as MS awareness can have an affect on many families in the Alexandria area.
