To the editor:

It is time. Time to get the lead out of our environment. More and more research is showing that loons, eagles, and other wildlife are dying from eating bits of lead. Whether it is from the bottom of the lake from lost fishing tackle or in the dead carcass or just the guts left to rot from a deer shot with a lead bullet.

Not only is this a problem for wildlife, but humans are also potentially endangered. If one eats wild game that has been shot with a lead bullet, they are likely to be eating lead, too. When the lead bullet strikes the animal, it breaks into small fragments all along the bullet path. Hunters try their best to remove the bullet and the damaged area, but research shows that there are still many fragments left in the animal. Non-lead bullets don’t break apart, but stay as one piece.

Lead is a toxic substance that needs to be removed from our environment. There are many non-lead alternatives available and local retailers of tackle and ammunition need to be encouraged to provide these options. As a customer, we too, need to be willing to protect our wildlife by purchasing and using only non-lead tackle and ammunition. We have a choice and time is running out as the lead in our environment threatens our loons, swans, eagles, other wildlife, and we as humans, too.
