To the editor:

An open letter of thanks to District 206 School Board members:

I taught in District 206 for over three decades. During that time, I attended numerous school board meetings.

I have always admired and respected the board’s work and been thankful there is a group of community members willing to set aside their own personal wants and needs in order to do what is best for our students and parents. Today’s board is carrying on that fine tradition. Thank you for that commitment.

I do not, however, remember a time in the last years when the challenges have been so severe and required so much patience and sacrifice from you as board members. Please know that most people in this community deeply appreciate your diligence.

As board members, you have demonstrated that students and their families come first. You wear masks at every board meeting. You understand that individual rights must give way to our shared responsibility to protect everyone in our district. You continuously demonstrate your willingness to stand against a disease that has so far afflicted more than 10,283 people in Douglas County (as of Feb. 4), killing at least 112 of our friends, neighbors, and family members. It is critical that all of us appreciate your commitment and courage.

Finally, I have seen the results of your careful work in overseeing strong curricula and instructional practices that inspire our students. You and our teaching staff are motivating students to become objective, compassionate, critical thinkers. You support the teaching of honest and accurate information that strengthens and enriches our students and our democracy. Because of your commitment, the next generation of American citizens coming from Alexandria will be prepared to carry on the profound responsibility of guiding our nation in these challenging times.
