1938, 82 years ago: The Park Region Echo reported that “two pictures of the Alexandria golf course published in LIFE magazine (the great picture magazine), gave one of the finest rural golf courses in the state publicity, which will undoubtedly result in many visitors to Minnesota coming here to see this course.” The story continued, “Several years ago the Alexandria Golf Club decided that as it rebuilt old greens they would be laid out in the form of states from which our summer visitors come. Green No. 8 was rebuilt in the shape of a map of Oklahoma and Green No. 17 as a map of Texas, a year ago. Summer visitors have been pleased with this courtesy, and as the years go by and other greens need rebuilding, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and other states will have greens laid out for them.

1970, 50 years ago: The stockholders of the Villard Cooperative Creamery voted to accept the proposal of Land O’Lakes, Inc., Minneapolis “whereby the assets of the Villard Coop Creamery would be sold to Land O’Lakes, effective Oct. 1, 1970.” The milk patrons will become direct shippers to Land O’Lakes with their milk being processed at its Alexandria plant.

KCMT-KNMT Television has scheduled a debate between former Vice-President Hubert H. Humphrey and Congressman Clark McGregor, who are Democratic and Republican candidates for the United States Senate seat vacated by Senator Eugene McCarthy.

Mrs. Kent Sherwood, administrator of Douglas County Hospitals, announces the completion of the new Coronary Care and Intensive Care Unit in Douglas County Hospital South. The Coronary Care Unit has monitoring equipment at each bedside which reflects the patient’s heart pattern and pulse rate on a TV screen. Another TV screen is located at the nurses’ station.

1995, 25 years ago: Douglas County Commissioners discussed the possibility of residents of the Viking Towers apartment complex in Alexandria having the option to receive home-delivered meals, not only for lunch and weekdays but also in the evening and weekends. Senior Director Mary Hillesheim and Sheriff Bill Ingebrigtsen approached the board about offering the services as part of a package of services being proposed by the county’s Department of Health Nursing Services.

According to the latest figures from the state Office of Environmental Assistance, Minnesotans recycled 42% of their garbage in 1994. That’s up 2% from statewide totals in 1993.

2010, 10 years ago: The Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum will soon be about more than boats and watercraft. Beginning this fall, landscapers will transform the parcel of land behind the museum into the Maritime Gardens. The two-to-three year project will include a lakeside setting with a variety of educational plantings, walking paths, picnic shelter, band shelter with seating, bocce ball court, and a nautical-themed play area for children.

Just for fun 1938 – 82 years ago: The 7th green on the Alexandria golf course is laid out in the shape of a map of Minnesota, and guarded by a water hazard which doubles as a bass propagating pond. It was reported that many golf balls fall short of the green and land in the pond instead.

Sports Trivia 1995 – 25 years ago: Alexandria’s Tom Lehman can put another feather in his hat when he tees off in the Ryder Cup at the Oak Hill Country Club, East Course in Rochester, New York. The former three-letter Alexandria athlete started his pro-tour career in the early 1980s. He is one of 12 United States golfers that will meet a 12-man European team in the biennial competition.
