And the most-requested library books are....

The Douglas County Library is a busy place.

The 21,728 registered borrowers at the library read, watched or listened to 324,837 books, audiobooks, movies and CDs from the library in 2017. At the end of 2017, the library's collection held 109,617 items.

Everything in our library is purchased by staff at the library, who use reviews, past circulation numbers, patron suggestions and the occasional inspired guess to decide what to buy for our library.

We have a big, excellent collection at our library for our patrons to enjoy. What happens if someone wants a book that our library doesn't own? What happens if our copy of the book is checked out or missing? In those cases, the Viking Library System connects our library with the rest of the world. Operating out of an office in Fergus Falls, Viking is one of twelve regional library systems in Minnesota. Each system is organized a little differently. Some, like the Great River Regional Library out of St. Cloud, run the libraries in the counties they serve. In Viking, each city or county runs its own library.

The 11 libraries in the Viking Library System, spread throughout six counties, use Viking to share services. The most visible ones to the public are library technology and the delivery system. Almost all of the technology at our library is managed by Viking. The computers are supported by the Viking Library System, the library's wireless internet is supplied by the Viking Library System and the library's circulation system is run by the Viking Library System. This circulation system works with all of the 11 libraries in our system and the bookmobile run by Viking.

When someone places a request on a book or other library item that is at another library, other libraries get a list of titles that need to be pulled off their shelves. Those items are packed up in crates and sent away in a delivery van that visits each library every other weekday. This service runs smoothly and can send books, movies and CDs from Perham to Browns Valley and all points in between within a matter of days.

Staff at the Viking Library System office were able to work their magic and compile a list of the books that were the most requested by patrons throughout the six counties of the system. As there is no cumulative list of the most checked-out books in our system, this is the best guess as to what was the most-read at our library and in our region. How many have you read?
