100 YEARS AGO

March 1911

John Affeldt, a genial German gentleman, has purchased the General Mercantile Store in Forada... The sound of thunder, the arrival of crows and the crocuses are sure signs of spring. The thaw on March 6 finished what little sleighing was left... Leaf Valley District #53 will build a two-room schoolhouse with basement for $3,000... Nesbitt and Gilmore lost their sawmill and 5,000 feet of lumber in a fire this week, adding to their long string of bad luck. Within the recent past, Nesbitt broke a leg, his farm house burned, he lost a finger and a lightning strike destroyed his barn and three cows... Former Alexandrians living in Minneapolis will unite at the Radisson Hotel for dinner at a cost of $1 per plate.

50 YEARS AGO

March 1961

Alexandria Police Chief Leslie Loch will join a select group of law officers in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Academy for a three-month course in all phases of law enforcement from patrol duty to administrative work... Future Farmers of America advisor Cap Paccioti congratulated chapter president Gene Benson for being designated District Star Farmer from the 16-school district... Bob Hawskins, popular sportscaster for KXRA, received the news that this station will be one of 500 across the nation to broadcast the heavyweight bout between Floyd Patterson and Ingemar Johannson... The windows at Bob's Clothes Shop are decorated with the "International Touch" with costumes of the Portuguese Fisherman and Spanish Dandee. The Bavarian and French are wearing caps from India and Morocco and slippers from Peru.

25 YEARS AGO

March 1986

When the big wooden nightclub crashed down without warning on Thursday, its boom was heard throughout the Alexandria area and beyond. The historic building, The Gangplank, had been known by many names, Triple R Ranch, Silver Slipper, The Crest, In the Woods, and its latest name of Zorbas. All that remains is its front, like a cardboard stage-set in a Western movie set with lumber piled up like splintered props destroyed in a Saturday night brawl... The Alexandria Cardinalettes, state champion dance line, will hold a "Gingham Dance" and "Prom" to raise funds to defray their travel costs... Judi Kraemer of Evansville has been selected as a finalist in the 1986 Mrs. Minnesota-American Pageant. Finalists will be judged for poise and personality, intelligence and appearance.

10 YEARS AGO

March 2001

A group of Russian developers toured the Carlos Creek Winery with owners Robert and Deborah Johnson. They will take back knowledge and experience of what is happening in similar climates to set up and establish small wineries in Russia... Lifestyle pictured several "fun-tastic" fish houses to show what some folks will do to make their favorite home-away-from-home more than a 6'-by-8' box with holes in the floor... Mary Schlangen, veterinarian at the Douglas County Animal Hospital, has been named the 2001 "State Young Careerist" by the BPW... Susan Brede rolled her first 300 game 13 years ago, the day before she finished her sixth season on the professional bowling team. That same afternoon she had another perfect game. This week she scored an 853 series, the second highest in Minnesota history, six pins below the state record.
