100 YEARS AGO

February 1910

The Carnegie City Library has 6,549 volumes. After paying the librarian's and secretary's annual salaries totaling $468, there is $467 in its treasury... December 1909 was the coldest December recorded in the history of Minnesota weather. The average temperature was 12.5 degrees, 7.5 degrees below the average for the past 20 years... Great Northern Railway has substituted the telephone for the telegraph on its 2,100-mile run... The domestic class members of Kensington High School served its staff a dinner in which they churned the butter, baked the bread, dressed the chickens and cooked all the vegetables... Between 500 and 600 persons in the congressional Sixth District have made applications to become census takers... The price of hogs has reached the highest since the end of the Civil War, reaching a high of $8.50 per hundredweight.

February 1960

Under the leadership of Arnold Kloen, about 200 willing workers kicked off the drive to raise money for the Parkers Prairie Memorial Hospital... Bud Loveland, proprietor of Lake Geneva Resort, caught a 7-pound, 4-ounce walleye that earned him the 10-horse Mercury outboard motor in the Chamber Ice Fishing contest... KCMT-TV and Austin's KAUS-KMMT-TV shared top honors in the Minnesota Associated Press' first cooperation contest. KCMT won for its coverage of last summer's Greyhound bus accident near Brandon, and KAUS for its consistently good news coverage for AP... Neta Frykman of Evansville Sunnyside 4-H won the KXRA Public Radio Speaking contest... The Rev. Ervin C. Malm will soon depart for Europe and the Middle East under the People-to-People cultural exchange program.

25 YEARS AGO

February 1985

Dennis Stark was humbled to be the recipient of a plaque "In recognition of being one of the 1985 Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans for distinguished contributions to the betterment of mankind"... Don't throw away those orange peels! Scientists have proved their oil wiped out fire ants and killed the fleas on a warehouse cat... Bernice Bosek, bride-to-be of David Mikkelson, was the winner of the $1,000 Dream Wedding sponsored by the Downtown Merchants... Two-year-old Melissa and 3-month-old Jonathan Shelling are in the Ashby home of their grandparents, Arthur and Rosella Synstellen, following the tragic death of their missionary parents in the Philippines... After only three clues had been revealed, Vern Challes is $300 richer for having found the hidden Brandon Winter Fest medallion.

10 YEARS AGO

February 2000

Dick Gustafson dropped the puck in a ceremonial face-off between Alexandria and Brainerd this week. He was honored for 31 dedicated years to hockey and is the first inductee into the Alexandria Hockey Hall of Fame... The Make-A-Wish Foundation granted a wish to Jessica Julig, 15, of Osakis. They gave her a computer, printer, money for software and a desk to allow her to keep up with school work and stay in touch with family while undergoing chemotherapy in Rochester... Average Joe Citizen will be able to learn the ropes of law enforcement through the Citizen's Police Academy with Alexandria Police Chief Chuck Nettestad at the helm.
