1968, 50 years ago: A.A. Paciotti, director of the Alexandria Adult Evening program, announced a course on a new, easy-to-learn shorthand, written with the "ABC's", a phonetic system called Stenoscript ABC Shorthand.
An expansion of an Alexandria business, Broadway Mobile Homes, is a 30 foot-by-80 foot addition, to be used in manufacturing camper tops, and deluxe ice fish houses and campers for a Minneapolis firm as well as itself. Vern Bissen is owner and Mrs. Bissen is office manager. Don Kortie is plant superintendent and Ed Aune is parts manager. Payroll will go from six full-time employees to 10 or 12.
Only 1,773 Douglas County voters turned out in one of the lightest primary elections in history. Evansville voters passed a $34,000 bond issue, 214 to 7. This bond is to be used, together with a grant from the government, to construct a new public community center building.

1993, 25 years ago: A $107,000 grant, given by the Minnesota Jobs Partnership Board to the Alexandria Technical College, will be used to train employees of seven area companies in a revolutionary technology known as GIS (Geographical Computer Systems). GIS is a computer mapping system of exceeding complexity that allows an almost infinite access to all sorts of data relating to geography. Alex Tech is the only technical school in the state that has a two-year GIS program.
One of several phases of a $3.5 million expansion at Arrowwood, A Radisson Resort is nearing completion. A 14,400-square-foot Tennis/Convention Center will be completed by October, according to Greg Parsons, general manager. The new center will include two indoor tennis courts and a pro shop, and will also be available for convention and trade shows, capable of holding up to 900 people and a 14-foot high vehicle entrance for trade show use.
2008, 10 years ago: A three-day training seminar attended by members of the Douglas County Dive Team and dive team members from North and South Dakota, Wisconsin and the Twin Cities, searched a portion of Lake Mina during a practice dive that had divers searching for "rescue dummies." Divers worked on rescue versus recovery skills and also had the opportunity to test out new equipment recently purchased by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department, including two full-face, wireless communication masks which allow diver-to-diver contact and diver-to-surface-support-people contact. Purchased through donations, the cost of each mask is roughly $2,800.
Just for fun 1968 - 50 years ago: Stenoscript ABC Shorthand is being taught in over 600 schools in the U.S., and is used by IBM, Hughes Aircraft, General Electric and others in their stenographic training.
1968 - 50 years ago: Broadway Mobile Homes started in 1950 with a mobile homes sales lot, and then expanded into a mobile home park for 22 families and in 1960, opened a second mobile home park and camp. This is near Carlos State Park and has room for 10 mobile homes, 20 tents and has complete resort facilities.
Sports Trivia 1993 - 25 years ago: Jim Christopherson, former Henning athlete and the brother of Ed Christopherson of Alexandria and Duane Christopherson of Parkers Prairie, begins his 25th season as head coach of the Cobbers and will take a 170-68-6 career record into Concordia's opener with the Moorhead State Dragons. Christopherson owns a 13-9-2 record against MSU.
