For the second straight year, an Alexandria youth baseball team has won a Minnesota Sports Federation state championship.
This group won an 11U AAA title in 2017. Now this summer, they took home the 12U AAA championship by coming out on top in Sartell July 28-29.
The group from Alexandria opened up pool play on July 28 by tying Sartell in a 7-7 game. In their second game, they used a nine-run first inning to roll past Delano by a 20-2 final after four innings.
That landed Alexandria a spot in the bracket round later that day. The first opponent was Rochester, and Alexandria came away from that one with a 14-7 win. An 11-5 win over Minnetonka in Sunday's semifinals set up a championship tilt with Elk River for the state title.
Alexandria had met Elk River in two other tournament championship games this summer, with both of those games being decided by one run. This featured the same outcome as Alexandria rallied from a 6-3 deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 7-6.
Members of the team include Carter Simonson, Kasen Muscha, Dylan Debilzen, Caleb Gimbel, Brayden Berg, David Revering, Gage Castle, Sawyer Rumohr, Brady Swendsrud, Chase Thompson, bat boys Colten Debilzen, Easton Castle and coaches Doug Debilzen, Tony Castle and Brian Gimbel.
