Winter's winds have ushered in new programs at the Alexandria Area YMCA. Here's a peek at what's being offered.

  •  Pre-K and kindergarten students can "get on the ball" of their basketball skills with beginning basketball. Offered for children ages 4 through kindergarten, the program will teach new skills, drills and games - all while meeting new friends. The "fun" in fundamentals will also be stressed as short hoops with age-appropriate basketballs will be used. Cardinal team members will assist with the program.

Sessions will take place at Washington Elementary School from 6:15 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning January 9 through February 20. Cost for the program is $26.25 and includes a T-shirt and awards.

  •  A basketball clinic will get players in grades 1 through 4 off the couch. They will improve their ball handling skills, shooting, passing and rebounding during drills designed to make the game fun. Cardinal team members will assist with the program.

The two sessions are scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. on January 19 and 26 at St. Mary's School. The cost is $15.
