Abby Williams and Luke Markstrom, students at Jefferson High School in Alexandria, were nominated to represent their school in the AAA (Academics, Arts and Athletics) program in Section 8AA competition. AAA winners are students who participate in Minnesota State High School League athletic programs, fine arts activities and carry a 3.0 or higher grade point average.

Abby is the daughter of Jim and Martha Williams.

She is involved in hockey, soccer and golf in the athletic arena and was named captain of the soccer and hockey teams this year.

Williams has participated in the Minnesota State Girls Hockey tournament the past three years. She was recognized as a member of the All-Tournament team in 2006 and last year received the Herb Brooks award.

Fine arts involvement includes band, pep band, symphonic winds and performances with the orchestra during concerts. She is an "A" honor roll student, a Spotlight on Scholarship athlete, and a member of the Cardinal Leaders. Community involvement includes volunteering at church, the youth hockey program, and the Hurricane Katrina Relief project.

Luke is the son of Jon and Sue Markstrom. Luke is an "A" honor roll student, a Spotlight on Scholarhip athlete and is involved in hockey and golf.

Markstrom was selected captain of the hockey team the past two years.

He has been a member of the student council for the past three years. Fine arts involvement includes band, pep band, jazz band, wind ensemble and performing with the orchestra during their concerts.

Markstrom spends time outside of the school day participating in other activities such as National Honor Society, Cardinal Leaders, the youth hockey program and church related activities.

Williams and Markstrom will advance to the section competition and will be honored at the Section AAA Recognition banquet at Cragun's Resort on Sunday, March 2, 2008. Section winners will advance to the state competition.

State Triple "A" Award recipients are selected by a multi-level process involving the League's member schools and administrative regions. League officials will announce the four award recipients (a girl and a boy from both a Class "A" and Class "AA" school) at an on-court recognition ceremony held on Saturday, March 29. Each award recipient will receive a four-year $1,000 scholarship.
