Students in the Brandon-Evansville School District will be getting out earlier this year than originally planned.
At the Monday, April 19, meeting, school board members approved moving the last day to May 28, before Memorial Day weekend, instead of June 4.
“We have unused snow days,” Superintendent Don Peschel told school board members, which garnered some laughs as Monday’s temperatures were in the 30s and snow flurries had been seen earlier in the day.
Peschel added he hoped he was jinxing it as a few people at the meeting knocked on wood as Minnesota weather is unpredictable. He also noted that moving the last school day up a few days would allow work being done on the schools to begin earlier so that it would be done before the start of school this fall.
The superintendent said he would rather have school end sooner now instead of school not starting on time in September.

Proposal in the works
Peschel said the district is working on plan to buy the part of the Evansville school building that is owned by the city. In the proposal, which has not been finalized, the school district would purchase that part of the building for $1. The city would retain the adjoining senior center and the park area and ball fields.
Additionally, if the district would ever discontinue using the Evansville building for education, the city would have the option of buying it back for $1.
Peschel said he attended the City Council meeting and that it was a positive meeting with great discussion. He told the school board there will be more to come and that he would continue to keep them updated.
“This is a work in progress,” he said.
Work session planned
The district is still looking at options for its facility issues and Peschel said he has some sample plans to share with the school, but wanted to plan a work session to discuss the plans.
“We’ll look at what can be done (at that meeting),” he said, noting that it would be a facilities work session.
The meeting was planned and approved for Wednesday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m.
