Berniece Dorothy Kalina, 85, died December 28, 2007 in Alexandria.

Berniece was born December 30, 1921 to Matt and Matilda (Dreuniak) Thoennes in Douglas County. Berniece was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and attended country school. She was united in marriage to Henry E. Kalina on September 17, 1940 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Urbank.

The couple farmed for 40 years in the Lake Reno area and retired from farming in 1980. They then purchased a home in Alexandria, where they thoroughly enjoyed their retirement years. Henry died on May 6, 1998 and Berniece continued to live in their home where she enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, Calvin (Lynnette) Kalina of Lowry, Neal (Melanie) Kalina of Lowry; daughters, Mavis (Tom) Hvezda of Alexandria, Carolyn (Marvin) Bodeker of Alexandria and Alyce (Jerry) Kollman of Sauk Centre; brothers, Matt Thoennes of Millerville, Norman Thoennes of Stillwater and Chris Thoennes of the state of Washington; sisters, Millie Bitzan of Brandon, Audrey Wilson of Billings, MT, and Naomi of Bismarck, ND; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Berniece was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; brother, Lewis Thoennes; and sister, Delores Chermak.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria on Thursday, January 3, 2008 with the Rev. Steve Binsfeld officiating. Interment was held in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Scott Hvezda, Jeff Hvezda, Bob Hvezda, Courtny Kalina, Brian Kollman and BreAnne Kalina.
