UNDERWOOD, Minn. — An Otter Tail County man has been accused of assaulting his husband before attacking the sheriff with a sword.
David Taylor Englin-Hill, 35, of Underwood, appeared Thursday, April 14, in Otter Tail County District Court on two charges each of second-degree felony assault and misdemeanor domestic assault. He’s being held at the Otter Tail County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office responded around 7 a.m. Tuesday to Englin-Hill’s home in Underwood for a report of an assault. A criminal complaint alleged Engling-Hill attacked his husband, that he wouldn’t let his husband out of the house and that he was armed with a sword. The husband said Englin-Hill hit him in the face, the complaint alleged.
Law enforcement tried to negotiate with Englin-Hill before Sheriff Barry Fitzgibbons told him officers would use deadly force if he made any moves toward his husband, according to court documents. Englin-Hill was standing between his husband and the door holding an unsheathed sword when officers breached the house, the complaint said.
One officer hit Englin-Hill in his stomach with a less-than-lethal bean bag round fired from a shotgun. The suspect doubled over but then went after Fitzgibbons with the sword, the complaint alleged.

Officers used a stun gun on Englin-Hill and arrested him, the complaint said.
It doesn’t appear Fitzgibbons was injured.
An attorney was not listed for Englin-Hill as of Thursday afternoon.
Underwood is about 10 miles east of Fergus Falls.
