MOORHEAD, Minn. — A former Minnesota State University Moorhead basketball player faces misdemeanor criminal charges after police said he brought a gun with him to a game in Nebraska.
Clay County prosecutors filed the charges Wednesday, Nov. 17, against Brandon Stewart Deravine, 22, of Atlanta.
Deravine is slated to appear in court Dec. 19 on charges of carrying a gun without a permit and illegal transportation of a firearm in a vehicle. Court records did not list an attorney for him as of Thursday.
Court documents alleged Deravine punched a glass window on a bus on Nov. 11 after a basketball game in Nebraska. The MSUM Dragons were in Wayne, Nebraska, that day and defeated Oklahoma Baptist University 76-67, according to MSUM’s website.
Deravine became angry after the game, according to court documents, though it's unclear why. A teammate reported to a coach that Deravine had a loaded handgun in his backpack, a criminal complaint alleged.

Deravine turned the handgun over to his coach, the complaint said. The gun was not fired and no one was hurt.
Deravine was removed from the team because of the incident and is not allowed back on campus, MSUM spokeswoman Kristi Monson said. The junior remains a student and is allowed to complete his classes online, Monson said.
MSUM President Anne Blackhurst sent an email that alerted university staff about the incident, noting that it activated “safety response protocols.” She said the student didn’t pose a threat to the campus.
“At MSUM, we take the responsibility of ensuring a safe campus for our Dragon family very seriously,” she said.
Resources have been made available to students impacted by the situation, Blackhurst said in the email.
