Master Gardeners host Let's Get Growing workshop

The Douglas County Master Gardeners will host the annual "Let's Get Growing" workshop on Saturday, March 28 at the Alexandria Technical College Office and Information Technology Center.

The Douglas County Master Gardeners will host the annual "Let's Get Growing" workshop on Saturday, March 28 at the Alexandria Technical College Office and Information Technology Center.

Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. and the program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The keynote speaker is Al Batt of rural Hartland. Al is a writer, speaker, storyteller and humorist who was born and raised on a farm near Hartland.

He writes three weekly humor and nature columns for many newspapers, does a regular radio show about nature on a number of radio stations and leads tours to Alaska.

Breakout sessions at the Let's Get Growing event include the following topics - perennials for shade gardens, seed starting, bountiful berries, growing for a farmers market, lakeshore restoration, hosta hybrids, tree pruning, new trees and shrubs, the synergy of gardening, heirloom vegetables, month by month in the garden, growing Shiitake mushrooms, growing peonies the natural way, container gardening, frosting flowers, greenhouses for home gardeners, growing salad greens, make and take bluebird houses, identifying trees, adaptive gardening, fruit trees, getting your garden ready for an event.

The workshop has sessions for all levels of gardeners. In addition to the many speakers, there will be vendors on hand with gardening items for sale, along with informational material and door prizes.

Water testing for nitrates will also be conducted. To bring a sample, run your cold tap for three minutes and collect about one cup of water in a plastic baggie or clean jar.

Early bird registration is $20 if received prior to March 19. Registrations received after March 19 or at the door are $25. Registration includes refreshments, lunch and sessions. To register or for more information, contact the Douglas County Extension Office at (320) 762-3890.
