When groups of people work together for the greater good, good things can happen.

At least that is what Alexandria Public Schools Superintendent Rick Sansted said about the school district working with City of Carlos leaders, who in turn worked with the Carlos Fire Department and both Carlos and Belle River townships.

The school district and City of Carlos recently signed a lease for a 5.98 piece of property near the Carlos Elementary School that will soon be the home of a new fire hall for the Carlos Fire Department.

The school district owns the land, which is north of Viking Trail, east of County Road 9 NE/Douglas Avenue and south of the ballfield within the Carlos city limits.

“We are grateful to the city and other entities and look forward to this partnership,” said Sansted. “We shared goals, listened to each other, met together several times and now this is a victory for all involved.”

Sansted said the school district had no long-time use for the property and that it was a win-win for the whole community.

Alexandria School Board member Alan Zeithamer said the signed agreement was a long time coming and that conversations about this partnership goes back about 15 years. But he said that with changes on both sides, it just took time.

“We’re excited about this,” said Zeithamer. “The Carlos community has provided tremendous support for the school. They have supported the school in unbelievable fashion and we are very happy to be able to partner with them.”
