Backer endorsed in District 12A

State representative and small business owner Jeff Backer, R-Browns Valley, earned the unanimous endorsement of Republican House District 12A delegates on April 21 at the party's endorsing convention in Morris.

"It is an honor and privilege to receive the endorsement from local Republicans," Backer said. "I am looking forward to a busy and productive end to this year's legislative session and hope to continue our work to make sure that Minnesota remains an outstanding place to live, work, and raise a family."

House District 12A includes all of Big Stone, Grant, Stevens, Traverse and Wilkin counties and the western half of Douglas and Pope counties.

Backer is currently serving his second term in the Minnesota legislature and was first elected in 2014. He is the vice-chair of the House Agriculture Policy Committee and also serves on the House Environment and Natural Resources Policy and Finance Committee as well as the Health and Human Services Finance Committee.

Backer has authored a number of bills aimed at strengthening agriculture and improving access to health care in rural areas.

Prior to his election to the House, Backer served on Browns Valley School Board and was the former three-term mayor of Browns Valley. Backer served as a volunteer EMT for the Browns Valley Ambulance Service for nearly 24 years.

Backer is married and has one daughter. The family attends Zion Lutheran Church.

Al Edenloff is the news and opinion page editor for the Echo Press. He was born in Alexandria and lived most of his childhood in Parkers Prairie. He graduated with honors from Moorhead State University with a degree in mass communications, print journalism.
