People of all ages celebrated the completion of the first two phases of Alexandria's Broadway Friday with a Party in the Street.
There were inflatable bouncy houses for the kids, a beer garden for the adults, a vintage car show, street dance, bean bag tournament, and music and food for everyone.
The party, hosted by the Downtown Merchants Association, also gave the public an idea of how Broadway will look after the construction is done, showcasing new sidewalks, benches and planters.
City leaders described the party as a "once in a lifetime" event because it was was taking place on a state highway. The construction project, which closed Broadway at Sixth Avenue, made it possible.
Finishing touches are still being made on the first two phases but the main work is done. Work on the third and final phase of the project, from Sixth to Eighth Avenue, will start August 11.
