It didn't take long for Alexandria firefighters to respond to their first structure fire of the new year.
At 8:46 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, they were called to a garage fire at 215 North McKay in the Hustad Mobile Home Park. The home is owned by Roger and Barbara Domine.
Firefighters arrived in three to five minutes and found fire and smoke billowing from the garage, which was detached from the home by only a few feet. A Buick LeSabre was in the garage and was blackened with char.
Firefighters were at the scene for about an hour and were able to stop the fire from spreading to the house.
When Roger Domine opened a side door on the garage, some of the roofing material dripped on his clothes but he wasn't injured and neither were any firefighters, according to Fire Chief Jeff Karrow.
Karrow estimated the garage loss at between $5,000 and $7,000 while the Buick, valued at between $2,000 and $3,000, was a total loss.
Firefighters used 5,000 gallons of water and five gallons of foam while battling the fire.
The cause will be listed as undetermined/possible electric, Karrow noted, adding that the fire did not start from the vehicle.
The house wasn't damaged. "They could have dinner there tonight if they wanted to," Karrow said.
