The Alexandria Literacy Project Board voted unanimously to dissolve the Alexandria Literacy Project on Dec. 31, 2020.

For the last 40 years, the school district has deferred the Adult Basic Education volunteer program to the Alexandria Literacy Project. They have embraced and shared literacy support to a magnitude of adult learners throughout Alexandria, according to Alexandria Public Schools leaders.

As a result of the dissolution, Alexandria Public Schools Community Education, will assume responsibility for the majority of the volunteer program under the Adult Basic Education program. Community Education statute states that ABE programs should train and use volunteers in the Adult Basic Education. It is common in Minnesota for community education programs to support volunteer programs.

"Alexandria Public Schools Community Education is excited to once again offer volunteer opportunities through ABE,” said Lynn Jenc, Community Education director, in a news release. “Alexandria Literacy Project has had a great tradition of supporting literacy adult learners and projects in the Alexandria Area. We are happy to continue the tradition on Jan. 1, providing greater efficiencies and program growth.”

The community can expect the same great volunteer experience under one umbrella, location and team, Jenc added.
