Alexandria Technical and Community College announced Thursday that it is cancelling the spring season of Senior College.

Senior College Director Amy Sunderland said the decision was made in accordance with the college's pandemic plan and out of concern for people's health. She said they also anticipate travel restrictions for several speakers they had lined up.

The cancellation also includes the free kickoff event the afternoon of Thursday, March 12, where Dr. Kate A. Brauman, a scientist at the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment, was scheduled to speak.

Senior College of West Central Minnesota offers a lecture series each fall and spring and a short course in winter. It had twice-weekly sessions lined up for seven weeks this spring.

"The college is continuing to work in close coordination with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, Horizon Public Health and the Minnesota Department of Health in response to COVID-19," read a statement from Sunderland. "This continues to be a very fluid situation, and we have a response team that is committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our campus and community. "

Refunds will be issued for those who have registered for the spring season, and Sunderland said they look forward to resuming Senior College in the fall.
