Discovery Middle School eighth-grader Josie Hochsprung won the Alexandria School District Spelling Bee and will now advance to the regional Spelling Bee Feb. 4 in Fergus Falls.

After 10 rounds of competition, Hochsprung won by correctly spelling “calamitous” and “fixity.” Seventh grader Erick Bergerson is the runnerup. The spelling bee followed the same rules as the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Eleven students representing 999 students in grades 6-8 participated in the oral round of the Spelling Bee finals at Discovery Middle School on Jan. 22. The district Spelling Bee determines who will represent Alexandria Public Schools at the Regional Spelling Bee.

Student participants included:

Sixth grade: Lucas Friday, Miles Bryce, Rhett Granning and Ellie Sticha

Seventh grade: Monroe Glade, Maia Fuglestad and Bergerson

Eighth grade: Mylee Montag, Emma Gylsen, Greta Oldenkamp and Hochsprung
