'A Christmas Carol'
Prairie Fire Children's Theatre and Alexandria Public Schools Community Education need actors in grades 3-10 for several performances of "A Christmas Carol." Directors from the Barrett theater will lead the week's practices and performances. The cost is $65 for five practice sessions in the Discovery Middle School Auditorium and Choir Room from Monday, Dec. 2 through Friday, Dec. 6, 3:30-10 p.m. Performances are 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6.

Getting ready for Santa
Get ready for the Santa season by creating a personalized Santa bag, a countdown sign and a plate for the cookies for the big night. Extra bags are available for an additional charge. The cost is $30 for one session at The Design Station.

Children ages 3-5 (they must be accompanied by an adult) are welcome to decorate a yummy Christmas tree cone. The cost is $5 for each parent and child for one session in Classroom D101 at the Early Education Center on 1410 S. McKay Ave.

Let's play 500!
Those who like playing 500 are welcome to join other like-minded people for a few hours of card playing. Organizers will provide cards and score sheets. If less than four people sign up, the event may be canceled. There is no cost for this single session at Woodland Elementary School, Room A209.
Tuesday, Dec. 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Students will learn how to cut and texturize metal, then add stamps or symbols and a unique message. Using findings and dangles, they can finish the piece into a cool necklace. A materials fee will depend on the metal chosen and can be paid directly to the instructor at the beginning of class. The cost is $30 for one session at Potomac Bead Company.

A grumpy Grinch plots to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville. Will he succeed? Organizers will provide popcorn and water for movie-goers. Check in starts at 5:45 p.m. with the movie starting promptly at 6 p.m. at Grand Arbor Theatre. The cost is $4 for students.

Inventor Tim Jenison conducts experiments to discover how 17th-century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer achieved such photographic realism in his paintings. Cost is $5 for one session, Grand Arbor Theatre.
