Alexandria Technical and Community College is offering a pistol certification course for those wishing to obtain a Minnesota permit to carry or who want to learn how to use a handgun.

The class is Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the college's Law Enforcement Training Center, Room 794. It has been approved by the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Participants will be instructed in Minnesota laws governing permits to carry, handgun basics including care and maintenance, types of ammunition, handgun safety, shooting positions and deadly force scenario discussion. The class will cover topics such as state laws regarding home defense, the threat and use of lethal force and your rights as a citizen.

The class includes live fire shoots in an indoor firing range. It will be taught by Scott Stumpf, a college firearms instructor with 32 years of law enforcement experience who specializes in use of force and deadly force situations.

The class costs $145. A $65 refresher course is also available. Participants may rent guns for $5.
