Sailing adventures

In this introduction to sailing, beginners will get out on the water and develop basic sailing skills on two-person Johnson Mimi Scows Sailboats. The cost is $79 for two sessions at Smokey Timbers.

Dates are either Thursday-Friday, Aug. 1-2, or Thursday-Friday, Aug. 8-9, from 6-8 p.m.

Acrylic canvas painting (calm sailing)

Relax as you paint a beautiful sunset sailboat painting with step-by-step instructions. The cost is $35 for one session at Art Bar 39. All materials and aprons will be provided.

Become a host family

Explore the world without leaving Alexandria! If you are retired, a one- or two-parent household or a single person with no children at all, you may be an eligible host for an exchange student. This casual information session will explain the U.S. Department of State's international high school student exchange program. Light ethnic appetizers will be served so please RSVP at least one week prior. There is no cost for this session at the Legacy of the Lakes Museum.

COR robotics - Tech Trek camp

Tech Trek provides students in grades 6-8 with opportunities to create and apply knowledge of STEM topics in a group setting. Students will work with Tetrix kits which integrate electrical, programming and mechanical concepts, guided by high school and collegiate level robotics teams. The fee is $99. Discovery Middle School Classroom D250.

COR robotics - Eureka engineering camp

Eureka introduces students in grades 3-5 to the core skills of robotics and other STEM areas through engaging, hands-on learning opportunities. Student groups will work with Lego Mindstorm kits, which include both programming and mechanical components, mentored by experienced high school and college robotics teams. The fee is $99. Discovery Middle School Classroom D250.

Basic phone photography

Local artist Leanne Larson will provide insight on subject matter, composition, light, and how to apply filters and upload to social media platforms. Bring your smartphone. Phones newer than the iPhone 6 are recommended; however much of what is covered applies to most smartphones. The cost is $16 for one session at Legacy of the Lakes Museum.

Beginner's watercolor workshop

This introductory workshop in the art of watercolor welcomes all beginners of all ages. Topics will cover the selection of paints, brushes and paper; mixing color; loading and handling the brush; and application styles. Students will create simple watercolor compositions. All materials will be provided by instructor. $120 for four sessions at Discovery Middle School Room D253, the Art Room.

Yoga in the gardens

Yoga equally strengthens and stretches, increasing flexibility and repairing muscles. This class is appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. The cost is $28 for three sessions at the Legacy of the Lakes Museum.

History of the lakes pontoon tour

This cruise leaves from the Arrowwood docks on Lake Darling and includes parts of lakes Darling, Carlos and LeHomme Dieu. History lovers will enjoy stories of how the area lakes influenced resort, recreational industry and personal lakeshore life. The view from the lakes has changed through the years. $25 per session.
