Douglas County township elections set for Tuesday, March 9

After the polling hours, many of the townships have their annual meeting.

Township elections will be taking place next Tuesday, March 9, in all but three of the 20 townships in Douglas County.

Currently, Brandon, Carlos and Miltona townships hold elections in November on even years. Two more townships – LaGrand and Osakis – may be joining the November elections if the ballot question passes.

Here’s a look at which positions are open, who is running and other questions that can be found on the ballot:

Alexandria

One supervisor: Jeff Oberg, incumbent, has refiled for the position, which is a three-year term.

Polls open from noon to 8 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Church with the annual meeting to be held remotely at 8 p.m. via Zoom – https://zoom.us/j/2770982408 .

Belle River

One supervisor: Andrew Miller has refiled for the three-year term.

Polls will be open from 5-8 p.m. at the St. Nicholas Church with the annual meeting to follow.

Holmes City

Supervisor: Joe Callahan, incumbent has refiled for a three-term and he will be facing challenger Dana Plowman.

Polls open from 5-8 p.m. at Holmes City Town Hall with annual meeting to follow.

Hudson

Supervisor: One three-year term supervisor position is open and Ron Fenelon has refiled for that position.

Treasurer: Cindy Van Luik, incumbent, has refiled for the two-year position.

Polls open from 4-8 p.m. at the Forada City Hall with the annual meeting to follow at 8:15 p.m. at the Forada Fire Station.

Ida

Supervisor: One seat is open for a three-year term. Incumbent Jim Peterson did not refile. Two newcomers have filed – Jeff Way and Jim Phillips.

Polls open from 5-8 p.m. at the Ida Town Hall with the annual meeting to follow.

LaGrand

Supervisor: One three-year term is open and incumbent Ben Johnson has refiled and is running unopposed.

There is one question on the ballot, which is whether to move the township elections to November on even numbered years.

Polls open from noon-8 p.m. at the LaGrand Town Hall with the annual meeting to follow.

Lake Mary

Supervisor: Incumbent Pete Fernholz has refiled for another three-year term and will face challenger, Richard “Dick” Quitmeyer, who also filed.

Treasurer:The two-year treasurer position is open and Christy Tvrdik, incumbent, is running unopposed.

Polls will be open from 2-8 p.m. at the Lake Mary Town Hall with the annual meeting at 8:15 p.m.

Leaf Valley

Supervisor: One three-year term supervisor position is open and Keith Schultz, incumbent, has filed.

Treasurer: Barb Guenther has refiled for the two-year term and is running unopposed.

Polls will be open from 3-8 p.m. at the Leaf Valley Town Hall with annual meeting at 8:15 p.m.

Lund

Supervisor: Mike New has refiled for his three-year supervisor position while Shaun Johnson will be running for a vacancy position, which was previously held by Shane Henrichs. That position is set to expire next year.

Treasurer: Tracy Zickur has refiled and will also be running unopposed for her seat, which is a two-year two.

Polls will be open from 4-8 p.m. at the Lund Town Hall in Melby with the annual meeting set to take place at 8:15 p.m.

Millerville

Supervisor: Incumbent Doug Schaffer has refiled for the three-year term.

Treasurer: Nancy Reitmeier has refiled for the two-year term.

Polls will be open from 4-8 p.m. at the Millerville Fire Hall with the annual meeting to follow.

Moe

Supervisor: Incumbent John Krafthefer has refiled for the three-year position.

Treasurer: Incumbent Florence Chlian did not refile. Amanda Topel has filed for the position, which is for two years.

Polls open from 5-8 p.m. at Pioneer Park in Garfield with annual meeting to follow.

Orange

Supervisor: One three-year term is open.

Treasurer: The two-year term position is open.

Polls will open immediately following the annual meeting, which is set to begin at 3 p.m. at the Osakis Community Center. Polls will close at 8 p.m.

Osakis

Supervisor: Howard Swenstad has refiled for a three-year term.

There will also be two questions on this year’s ballot, including whether to make the position of township clerk/treasurer an appointed position and whether to move the township elections to November.

Polls open from 5-8 p.m. at Ed Pollard Community Center with the annual meeting at 8:15 p.m.

Solem

Supervisor: One three-year term is open.

Treasurer: The two-year term position is open.

Polls will be open from 5-8 p.m. at the Kensington Rune Stone Park Visitor Center with the annual meeting at 4 p.m.

Spruce Hill

Supervisor: One three-year term is open and Terry Sather has refiled. He will be running unopposed.

Treasurer: Incumbent Jesse Lusty has refiled for his two-year term. He is also running unopposed.

Polls will be open from 5-8 p.m. at the Spruce Town Hall with the annual meeting to take place at 8:15 p.m.

Urness

Supervisor:One three-year term is open and Gerald Johnson has refiled and is running unopposed.
