Although west central Minnesota was hit with another winter storm Thursday, the construction season is bumping along in Douglas County.
County Engineer/Public Works Director Dave Robley updated county commissioners on planned road construction in 2013. Some funds have carried over from last year, putting the county in a positive position.
"Based on our estimates and the way prices are coming in yet this year," Robley said, "it looks like we'll be able to add or move up a couple projects."
A three-mile overlay project on the north end of CSAH 34 from Casa Marina Road to CSAH 5 planned for 2014 and an overlay on County Road 64 on the east side of Lake Irene from CSAH 14 to Soo Line Railroad planned for 2016 are both being looked at for this year's construction season. The projects combined were estimated to cost $1,050,000 at the time of the 2012 public works annual information meeting.
Robley said it looks as though the county can add two projects to this year's program. Adjustments will be made on the projects and brought before the board for approval.
Future projects will be discussed at the annual public information meeting on May 16 at 7 p.m. at the Douglas County Public Works building, 526 Willow Drive in Alexandria.
RACING TOWARD SUMMER
A running theme carried through Tuesday's Douglas County commissioners' meeting. The board approved use of county roads for the third annual Awake the Grapes race and the Chain of Lakes Triathlon scheduled this May. Robley outlined the routes for both races.
The Awake the Grapes race will be held in Alexandria on May 26. Alexandria Figure Skating Club and the Alexandria Kiwanis are presenting the event with Carlos Creek Winery serving as hosting sponsor.
The 10K course includes the Carlos Creek Winery property and vineyards, County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 34, around Lake Ida and County Road 61. A 5K on Carlos Creek Winery's property and a fun run will also take place. The 10K is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and the 5K starts at 10:15 a.m. Proceeds go to the Alexandria Figure Skating Club.
Runners can pre-register online at http://bit.ly/10N1pIE for $25 by May 16 or for $30 afterward until the day of the race.
A 13-mile bike course is plotted along county roads 46, 73, 9 and 82 for the Chain of Lakes Triathlon to be held on Saturday, May 4. A 600-yard swim and 2.8 mile run on CSAH 46 are also included. Racers will begin at Discovery Middle School in Alexandria.
Robley said organizers brought the request to the county this year because Highway 27 is now CSAH 82. Both Awake the Grapes and the Chain of Lakes Triathlon will have the sheriff's posse assistance at intersection crossings.
