Cards fourth at Buffalo Bison Invitational

Despite an injury to state-ranked Charlie Kirscht midway through the tournament, the Cardinal wrestlers finished the day 2-2 to bring home fourth place.

Senior Mike Kirscht earned his 100th career win during the tournament, while seniors John Amundson and Nate Kelly received awards for going undefeated on the day.

"We started the Buffalo tournament with a win over Glencoe-Silver Lake, but we looked a little flat," said head coach Tom Ellison. "Maybe it was the bus ride at 6:30 in the morning that we hadn't shaken off yet, but as each wrestler got into their match, they quickly got it going and we had enough wins to secure the dual.

"Our captains took it upon themselves to fire up our team as we wanted to do well against Buffalo," he said. "Buffalo is a section opponent, and come section time it is nice to have wrestled all of our challengers.

"Anthony McQueen started the match with a pin and the rest of the team was really fired up after that. Our team went on a roll with nine straight wins and we didn't let Buffalo get a win until the 171-pound weight class."

After those two opening victories of 46-18 over Glencoe-Silver Lake and 52-15 over Buffalo, the Cardinals had to face Class AA's No. 5 ranked Foley, where they fell 51-17.

"Our dual with Foley looked lopsided, but we felt we battled well during the whole match," said Ellison. "In wrestling, the matchups in the dual are important and Foley did a good job of putting a lineup together to keep us off guard.

"Mike Kirscht had a big win in this dual as he recorded his 100th career win."

Alexandria's last match of the day came against Buffalo in the third place bracket where the Cards fell by one point 34-33.

"Our last dual against Big Lake was a back-and-forth dual," said the Card coach. "We were without Charlie Kirscht in the dual as he hurt his shoulder during the Foley match.

"With Charlie in the lineup, I feel we could have beaten Big Lake, but that is the way it goes sometimes. We have to learn to handle adversity and get some of our JV guys ready to step up to the challenge and do the job for us when we need them."
