Baseball fans in Alexandria can start thinking about spring again now that the Northwoods League has released the 2008 schedule for the Alexandria Beetles.

Baseball fans in Alexandria can start thinking about spring again now that the Northwoods League has released the 2008 schedule for the Alexandria Beetles.

The Beetles kick off the 2008 season at home on Thursday, May 29 against Thunder Bay. It is the first of what is a six-game home stand to start the season for the Beetles.

After a two-game set with the Border Cats, Alexandria will welcome the Eau Claire Express to town for two games before the Rochester Honkers come to town on June 2 and 3.

The Beetles and their I-94 rivals, the St. Cloud Riverbats, meet three times this season at Knute Nelson Memorial Park on June 8, 15 and August 10.

Duluth comes to town for a four-game set from August 6-9 in a battle that both teams hope will have playoff implications.

Games have also been moved up an hour to a 6:05 p.m. start time for the upcoming season.

"I think it gives a lot of Beetle faithful, the small kids, a chance to stay until the end of the games and get a chance to get autographs and interact with the players," field manager Eric Maas said. "For many fans, that interaction is what really makes Beetles' games a unique and special experience."

The 2008 season marks the 15th year of the Northwoods League's existence. The 14-team league will once again play a 68-game regular season schedule before two rounds of best-of-three playoffs decide the league champion.

Season tickets for the Beetles are now on sale for $149 for 34 home games. To order tickets call the Beetles' ticket office at (320) 763-8151.
